Here are the translations of the Filipino phrases used in Season 2 Episode 11 of Nanay's Notes: Nanay's Nose's “Art Sho(w)e" featuring an interview with Artist/Shoe Designer Naomi Banal:
Magkwentuhan tayo.
Let’s exchange stories.
Gusto ko malaman…
I would like to know…
Ano yung mga ginagawa mo na artistic…?
What would you do that was artistic…?
Una sa lahat
First of all
Kasi…
Because
Pano mo pagkakasyahin ang budget?
How do you make your budget fit?
Ganon no, yung matitira
That’s how we use what’s left (of it)
Magdro-drawing ako duon sa nasulatan na
I would draw on what has been written on
Nakita ko ng brother ko
My brother saw me
I told him on his 78th birthday that he was a big factor in my becoming an artist
Kasi may kapalit yon
Because it was in exchange for something
Pag bata ka may toka toka kayong house chores
As a chid, you would have your own assigned house chores
Alam ko birthday niya eh
I knew it was his birthday
Binunot-bunot pa yon. Wala pa kaming floor polisher
I polished it with a coconut husk. We did not have a floor polisher
Kumikita siya konting pera
He was earning a little
Para akong…yung mundo ko…wow! Eto na yun!
I was like…my world was..wow! This is it!
Walang naman ready-made na paper doll
There were no ready-made paper dolls
Pero yung mga damit nila sa paper
But their clothes were drawn on paper
Iba pa yung palda, iba pa yung pants. So gagawa ka ng paraan
The skirt would be different, so were the pants. You’ll have to make a way
Even if perhaps there were already paper dolls at that time in the bookstore
So that’s what I did, I would just make my own paper doll
Ang ganda pala naman ng result. Lumalabas ang creativity ng isang bata.
And the results were beautiful. A child’s creativity is encouraged.
Siguro yon, isa sa mga nangyari
So maybe that was one of the (artistic) things I did
Kinukulayan mo yon
You would color it
So talagang beginnings na yun ng leaning mo towards art…
So that was part of your beginning to lean towards art…
Tests siguro na bagsak
Tests which you may have failed
Oo, totoo yun!
Yes, that’s true. Maybe the only high grades I got were in Art
Hindi ako ah… hindi ako nahihiya. Yun siguro talaga ako nag-excel ako don.
I am not… no, I’m not ashamed. That’s probably where I really excelled.
Also, maybe my day was happy whenever I was able to draw.
Yes, compared to solving a math problem, that was really suffering.
Kasi naman nung time natin, “Ah,,, you let your child muna…draw…”
Cause during our time, we did not have “Ah… you should allow you child to just draw first…”
Walang ganun ang parents natin nuon eh.
Our parents did not have that then.
So that’s what I would do, really, that’s what I did. I preferred seeing the action happening in the books than… the words did not appeal to me.
Napansin nila yon
They noticed that
Pano ba naman?
How can that happen?
Parang kanya-kanya yon.
It’s like we do our own thing.
Yung back ng pad paper, kasi kailangan matigas yung pinaka-doll mo eh
The back of the pad paper, because the doll has to be hard
Syempre nagmamature ka na
Of course you were maturing
Ngayon nuong time namin…
So then, during our time, I guess I was given a break when one time our group was tasked, I was assigned.
…sa isang tabi lang ako
I would just sit quietly (was shy)
So that’s what I did. I showed my talent because that’s what I was able to do
Tsaka hilig
And interest
So ginawa ko yon… so dun ako na-notice na ng mga classmates ko
That’s what I did, so that’s how I got noticed by my classmates
What I did was, I looked for a best friend who was good in Math
Siya nagtuturo sa kin
She would teach me
Kapalit non, sige ako magdrodrawing ng kailangan mo (art project niya)
in exchange, I would draw whatever she needed like her art project
So mga club-club na, so syempre may mga Math Club, ako sa Art Club
When it came to clubs, of course there was Math Club, I joined the Art Club.
Konti lang ang pila duon
Only a few would line up for it
Oo, konti lang ang magaling sa Art.
Yes, only a few are good in Art.
That’s when I got surprised at the support of my parents. They did not force me saying: “Oh no, not that.”
Although alam nila walang pera sa art. Pero sabi nila, “Sige, kung saan ka…”
Though they knew there was no money in art, they said, “Ok, go where you want to.”
Buti na lang kasi bunso ka na
It’s good too that you were the youngest.
Mamili ka ng course (engineering kailangan)
Choose a course which will give you good income, like it has to be engineering.
I was blessed na binigyan ako ng scholarship for that
I was blessed to be awarded a scholarship.
But during college, talagang nagbloom ako.
Because, as I said, “See, I bloomed in college compared to high school!”
But during college, I really bloomed.
Pag yun talaga, kailangan, very competitive ako.
When it comes to art, I was very competitive.
History and stuff, you can have those.
Kasi maganda ang grades ko.
Because I got good grades.
That’s a big load off my parents’ expenses.
Dun naman na-develop ang entrepreneurship ko.
That’s where my entrepreneurship was developed.
I would get all the canvas my classmates weren’t using anymore and did not want to take home.
Bebenta ko yon, tapos meron akong extra, meron akong kita.
I would sell those, and so I had extra money, and income.
You were really entrepreneurial even as a child.
Hindi, kasi survival eh. Nine eh, kailangang mag-survive.
No, it’s because of survival. We were nine, so I had to survive.
Binigyan ka rin ng creativity ni God.
God also gave you creativity.
Tell us… was the start of your career also in the field of art?
Pero ano sila…hindi sila yung commercial. Pero…anong tawag mo dun?
But they were not commercial greeting cards… but, what do you call them?
I said, I do not belong here. This is too small for my range of creativity. I don’t see my creativity coming out.
Kasi ang training namin nun
Because our training then was…
They noticed, they saw…my boss saw that.
Ang galing niya, ng boss ko.
O dun ka na lang talaga…?
So that’s where you discovered it…
Doon na lang ako
That’s where (I learned to like shoes.)
Tsaka siguro I guess, tawag nga doon may tactile learner.
And, as they call tactile learner, that’s what I liked to do. Joining in the mixing…
Hindi ka lang designer
You were not just a designer.
You’ll just give your drawing, and you’re done?
Di ba, napakagandang training yun? Sa kin, the best training yun. Hindi lang yung uupo ka desk.
Isn’t that good training? For me, that was the best training, You weren’t just confined to a desk.
Hindi naman una, my own business
It wasn’t at first my own business.
Pero nakita ko pigil pa din
But I still felt I was limited.
Kung gusto mo umasenso ang business mo
If you want your business to prosper
Ikaw na ang pinag-uusapan namin
You’re the one we are talking about here
Alam mo yun, little by little
You know, little by little
Wala naman kaming benta yung first day namin
It wasn’t realistic that your sales would immediately be good. We did not have any sale on our first day.
Kami-kami
It was just us
Ang ganda, talagang hands-on
It was beautiful, we were really hands-on.
Walang parents na nakikialam
Our parents couldn’t interfere.
Kayo rin
You too
Medyo nagla-lie low na kami
We were lying low a bit.
Wala lang, patingin-tingin lang
Just nothing, I would just observe.
Sa business ako nag-focus.
I focused on the business.
Nakita yung works ko. Five works ubos yun.
My works were viewed. Âll my 5 works were sold.
So sabi ko
I was saying
Unti-unti, babawasan pero unang nabenta
Little by little, there were sales but the first piece sold was…
Dun na yun nag-start
That’s where it started.
Kanina kinekwentuhan mo ako
You were telling me a while ago
Lalo na nga, ngayon
Especially now
Sobrang dami kong kwento
I have so many stories to share
Hindi ko naman yan madadala eh
I can’t take all this with me
Mula sa Diyos, Para sa Diyos
From the Lord, for the Lord
May sinabi si…
She said something
Nakakahiya yan
What a shame
Kaya kaya din natin.
That’s why we can do it.
Sabi nga namin
We did say
Malaking, ano sa kanila yun, plus
That’s big plus
Wala kayong self-confidence ha
You shouldn’t have self-confidence, ok?
Christ-confidence ha, yung ang meron kayo ha
Christ-confidence is what you have, ok?
More of God, less of me.
As a parent, you need to be involved, to be present, to be there. They see us fight, but repent, forgive. And ask for forgiveness.
